New Store

When I pulled up to my new store on the first day, I had a truck waiting to be unloaded, 2 temporary guys to help, and the floor guy there to put a couple of coats of wax on the floors. But I had no keys! The GC didn't get there until about 9am and we had no forklift so we unloaded 18 pallets of really heavy stuff by hand. When we finally finished that the forklift showed up. The first week was basically unloading lots of pallets, checking them in, taking stuff out of boxes, and throwing boxes away.

Here's how the store looked at the end of Week 1. Standing at the front door looking to the right:

The first week also consisted of learning about my two temporary guys' time in prison. One of them was there for 6 years- I didn't ask what for- but he showed me his tattoos. Both of his calves were covered in nude women, and his back was completely covered with a wizard-devil that is supposed to 'protect him from certain types of people' which I found out meant black people. What?! All of his tattoos were done in prison and he said he wishes he didn't have them.
The other guy told me about being addicted to meth and both showed me pictures of their kids. Really cute kids and it made me sad to think about those kids' lives, just based off of the stories these guys were telling me about things they do in their free time. The meth guy also told me how he got a big refrigerator box, cut a hole in the top, laid down inside, and had his brother put a bong through the hole so he could get high inside the box. Apparently he couldn't walk when he took the lid off. And it left a brown stain on his carpet that he couldn't get out so he put a rug over it.
Talking to them made me remember what it was I liked about journalism- it's the learning about different people and their outlooks that's interesting to me. You could tell these guys had made a lot of mistakes, and probably still were, but they showed up for work on time and worked really hard, and I can respect them for that.
